Orem area update for the week of May 24, 2010

This update contains information about scheduled construction activities, inconveniences and progress along I-15 from Geneva Road in Lindon through University Parkway in Orem.

Work Area Construction Update

Construction activities are beginning to increase in the Orem work area. As new activities come onto the schedule, they will be listed in chronological order for your convenience.

Upcoming Construction Activities

  • May 21-23: I-15 southbound will be reduced to three lanes in the area of the 200 South bridge in Lindon from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. for barrier placement. This work will take four days to complete.
  • May 21 - June 15: I-15 will be reduced to three lanes in each direction between 1600 North and 800 North in Orem from 9 p.m. to 5:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday and from 10 p.m. Friday to 7:30 a.m. Saturday to accommodate median placement, construction activities and an upcoming traffic shift.

For the Memorial Day holiday, all lanes will remain open to travel from noon on Friday, May 28 until 9 p.m. on Tuesday, June 1.

Ongoing Construction Activities

  • To improve the flow of southbound traffic through the S-curves area in Provo during I-15 construction, the necessary lane closure will allow three lanes in both directions. Speed limits are reduced and lanes are narrowed and shifted. Motorists should anticipate travel delays during heavy commute times and longer delays during holiday weekends.
  • Crews will be installing traffic sensors at several intersections along State Street in Orem and Lindon and along University Parkway, Center Street, 1200 West and 1600 North in Orem. Work will be performed mostly at night and is expected to take approximately 14 days to complete.

Construction schedules are subject to change due to situations such as inclement weather, equipment problems, construction delays or other emergencies.

Project Overview

The project will renovate I-15 in Utah County to meet projected transportation demands through the year 2030. The project will:

  • Add two travel lanes on I-15 in both directions from Lehi Main Street to Spanish Fork Main Street
  • Extend the Express Lane in both directions from University Parkway in Orem to Spanish Fork
  • Rebuild or reconfigure 10 freeway interchanges and replace or widen 55 aging bridges
  • Use 40-year concrete pavement along entire corridor

Coping with Construction

There will be periods of significant delays. UDOT is asking for your cooperation through construction and is providing tools and information to help you plan ahead and adapt.

  • During the next three years, expect closures and travel delays on mainline I-15 and, at interchanges, ramps and cross streets.
  • To minimize delays, drivers and businesses are encouraged to employ TravelWise methods including carpooling and shifting travel times and to use local roads for shorter trips. Additional travel tips are available at udot.utah.gov.
  • I-15 CORE has a comprehensive public communication and outreach plan to inform drivers and businesses in advance of closures, alternative routes, inconveniences and delays. Information is available atudot.utah.gov/i15core or, 888-i15-CORE (888-415-2673), or you can e-mail i15core@utah.gov.
