2009 Volcom "Wild in the Parks Tour":

The 1st stop of Volcom’s 2009 Wild in the Parks tour went down on Saturday, May 9th at Greenwood Skatepark in American Fork, Utah!
The 2009 WITP tour will consist of 12 regional qualifying stops throughout North America. Similar to last year, the best amateur skaters will collide at Arizona’s Rio Vista Skatepark for the $20,000 Championships on Saturday, September 26th!
The decision to once again kick things off at Greenwood Skatepark was an easy one. Boasting perfect weather, over 200 competitors, insane skating and a solid vibe, Utah provided the perfect note to get the 2009 ball rolling! Even Volcom snow team rider Seth Huot rolled by on his Harley to grill up some free food for the masses! Yes, it was one of those days that made the snow and winter cold a distant memory.

The 14 & Under division got the party started shortly before noon and wasted no time getting down to business! They charged the three WITP zones with a “take no prisoners” attitude and left everyone wanting more! Off the top of my head I can recall seeing a kickflip front board, front board sex change, kickflip manny kickflip out and a kickflip 5-0! It was close, but after the numbers were crunched, Tyson Bowerbank took 1st, Chandler Siepert claimed 2nd and Christian Bourne rounded out the top 3!

Next up, it was the 15 & Over division’s chance to turn it up to awesome. It quickly became apparent that the younger group had inspired them to step up and figure it out! Lot’s of familiar faces like Christian and Brandon Hobush were on the scene and chasing down victory. Some tricks that left us slack-jawed were; smith grind flip out, switch back lips and a kickflip front 5-0. After all was said and skated, Brandon Hobush came out on top with Andrew Thompson and Justin Long in second and third respectively!

The Pro-Am division was last to skate and had a bag of tricks the size of Utah! The Brodie Penrod factor was in effect and had the judges shaking their heads from beginning to end! Oliver Buchanan, Sam Hubble and Kevin Fedderson blew out of the starting gates and were intent on giving Brodie a run for his money! Numbing minds were switch hardflips, a nollie flip back lip to fakie, a flip back tail, a front blunt flip out and a flip back tail, bigspin out! Despite everyone riding super well, Brodie successfully defended his title with Oliver Buchanan in 2nd and Kevin Hutson in third!

Thanks to American Fork’s Derric Rykert, Berklee Daley, Steel Anderson, Aubrey Muania and Kaitlin Lawson for all of their hard work and WITP support! Thanks also to Alec Soleberg (Milo Sport), Dirk Hogan (Blindside) and Moses Sanchez (Technique) for judging. Special thanks to Chase Fromm and Randy “Killer” Vannurden for helping us hold things down and to Seth Huot for grilling free hotdogs for everyone. Last, but definitely not least, thanks to Vestal watches, Electric Visual and Fortica Skateboards for supporting the scene with prizes!
